Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - John Thatcher
As beautiful as it is practical, John Thatcher’s furniture has a common sense quality that is the hallmark of all successful design. Take his Tripos range of stools and low tables: originally inspired by an antique Chinese stool, the three legs and rails of each piece meet in an equilateral triangle formed by half-lap joints giving the functional, timeless design of these pieces a modern, graphic edge.
Chopping boards, made using off-cuts to minimise the waste of raw materials, come with a big satisfyingly-chunky peg from which they can be hung… and easily found. What might not be so obvious is the discreet mindfulness that lies at the heart of John Thatcher’s art: every piece is made so that it can be dismantled for repair or repurpose — an elegant riposte to today’s mass manufacturers who deliberately make things irreparable so that we are forced to buy them anew.
Take the opportunity to view John’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre. Art in the Home is a selling exhibition of Mid-Century design classics brought to you by Studio 2021 mixed with the very best of Sheffield’s furniture makers, ceramicists and fine artists.
