Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - Francisca Onumah
“My work encourages people to pick it up and interact with it,” says the Ghana-born Sheffield-based silversmith Francisca Onumah of her vessels, vases and tumblers that all bear the scars of her fascination with mark making. “It comes from my love of textiles — African textiles and Japanese designs in particular. I like to treat the metal as if it were fabric.”
With that in mind, Omimah folds metal, like you would fabric, and rolls/hammers textiles onto the metal's surface to create imprints of texture and pattern. “I like to use silver and copper because they’re soft metals so you can get much deeper marks,” the artist says with a big grin on her face. The end result is something beguiling, shaped into forms that Omimah herself describes as ‘ambiguous’.
Take the opportunity to view Francisca’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre. Art in the Home is a selling exhibition of Mid-Century design classics brought to you by Studio 2021 mixed with the very best of Sheffield’s furniture makers, ceramicists and fine artists.
