Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - Krishna Alageswaran
Krishna Alageswaran’s ceramic ’Raptor’ boxes are powerfully evocative. For some people, they’re a reminder of ancient Mayan or Aztec civilisations; for others, it’s the dystopian cityscapes of Ridley Scott’s ‘Bladerunner’. “They’re not about any specific buildings in particular but the textures of buildings,” says the Sri Lankan-born Sheffield-based ceramic artist and tutor.
But what is in no doubt is the timely nature of Krishna’s work as nature’s place in the urban environment comes into sharp focus. “These pieces celebrate the fragile yet valuable space that the city provides for wildlife,” says Alageswaran referring to the bird of prey that decorates some of his box’s lids. “The St George's Campus building in Sheffield has been a refuge for a pair of peregrines since 2012 and their nesting activities can be viewed on a web cam.”
Take the opportunity to view Krishna’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre. Art in the Home is a selling exhibition of Mid-Century design classics mixed with the very best of Sheffield’s furniture makers, ceramicists and fine artists.
