Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - Kandy Diamond
Kandy Diamond (yes, that’s her real name) is to knitting what The Sex Pistols were to popular music. Fantastically irreverent, her adventures in knitted textiles are a two-finger salute to the polite twinset-and-pearls brigade and push the boundaries of her craft. “My work often involves a play on scale, with inspiration taken from popular culture, storytelling, novelty and knitting related objects,” says Diamond pointing to her series of knitted ‘posters’ of horror film ‘posters’ where knitting needles have been used as a weapon. “As you can see, I’m a big fan of ‘trompe l’oeil’.”
Proving her own wicked way with a pair of knitting needles/knitting machine, Diamond pulls out knits that look like tree bark — its texture and knots captured in lambswool and bouclé; enormous knitted eyes for cushions, and a series of cats’ faces knitted from submitted cat-selfies. “I set up my Knit and Destroy label after graduating and now we have our own book called ‘Knit and Destroy…gets handy!.” If you lack the courage (or the time) to knit some of the 20 kitsch patterns, don’t worry: a selection of her work and a special workshop will be available at Art in the Home this November.
Take the opportunity to view Kandy’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre. Art in the Home is a selling exhibition of Mid-Century design classics brought to you by Studio 2021 mixed with the very best of Sheffield’s furniture makers, ceramicists and fine artists.
