Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - Henk Littlewood
Henk Littlewood was surely always destined to be a master carpenter. Try saying his name — HENK! — without sounding like you’re summoning an imaginary viking god of wood. And then there is the coincidental symbolism of his surname. He even looks the part of the worldly-wise wood chopper: all roughly-hewn hands and trusty, warm-hearted smiles. It’s a seductive combination that his fans know only too well. “My clients tend to be adventurous and with disposable income,” says Henk as a matter of fact. “Listening to them and what they want is an important part of what I do.”
Littewood also has the ability to tease qualities out of wood that we might not ordinarily see: colours, grains and the diseased bits that have their own beauty. “He is utterly in love with the materials he works with,” testifies one of his customers. “There is a romantic, fairytale quality to what he does.” It’s true. Who could fail to see one of his bespoke beds in Hansel & Gretel’s cottage, or admit that one of his folding chairs would look perfectly at home in a 14th century palace?
For Art in the Home Littlewood has dreamt up a kidney-shaped partner’s desk/worktable/console (“It can be whatever you want it to be”) and a series of ellipse-shaped mirrors made of steam-bent red padauk wood; just the thing when you need to ask ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall…’
Take the opportunity to view Henk’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre. Art in the Home is a selling exhibition of Mid-Century design classics brought to you by Studio 2021 mixed with the very best of Sheffield’s furniture makers, ceramicists and fine artists.
