Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - Carla Murdoch
Sheffield is a better place for having Carla Murdoch in it. The Hillsborough-born lass, who has recently returned home after a stint teaching in Lichfield, proves that there is beauty to be found in the functional… and that studio pottery can be really cool. “Everything I make is something that I need at home. That’s how everything starts,” states the ceramicist with a clear sense of purpose. “These platters came about because we’ve been having people around for tapas and I needed some big plates on which I could put a selection of meats, cheeses, nibbles…”
The super-fine, slab-built platters (approx. £240) are a natural addition to her range of foodie-friendly pieces that also includes ramen bowls and multi-purpose tumblers. “Food and pottery are so important to me,” says Murdoch whose ceramics seem to be infused with the pleasure she gets from the communal act of eating and sharing food with loved ones. “Being able to combine the two together brings me great joy." Look out for announcements about a joint workshop between Carla Murdoch and Kate Langrish Smith at Art in the Home.
Take the opportunity to view Carla’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre. Art in the Home is a selling exhibition of Mid-Century design classics brought to you by Studio 2021 mixed with the very best of Sheffield’s furniture makers, ceramicists and fine artists.
