Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - Keith Tyssen
Everybody needs a piece of Keith Tyssen’s work in their life. The long-established and respected designer/metalsmith is something of a godfather figure to Sheffield metal workers and a giant of Northern design greats. If you want to know why, look no further than one of his signature double-skinned bowls. “I designed the first one as a porridge bowl for my kids because they would spend so much time messing around that their breakfast would go cold,” explains Tyssen of the bowls which are as curvaceous as a doughnut and made from two sheets of metal (pewter or silver depending upon your budget) with a cavity in-between which creates a thermos-like vacuum to keep the bowl’s contents warm/cold. “They are such enjoyable things to make and have around.”
Just listening to Tyssen describe the process of ‘spinning’ the metal sheets into bowl shapes and burnishing them into form, it’s easy to see that it’s a process that still thrills him to this day. “It’s such a joy to see it being done. This is why I do what I do.”
Take the opportunity to view Keith’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre.
