Art in the Home Confirmed Artist - Suzanne Berry
For any artist worth their creative salt, the process is just as important — if not more so — than the end result. Silversmith and jeweller Suzanne Berry is no exception to this rule. Twig-handled cutlery, silver tumblers engraved to look like tree bark, and tiny cups with handles cast from seed pods all started their journey with a stroll in the countryside. “My work is about going out into nature,” says Berry who was born in Johnstone near Glasgow but who, for the past two years, has been here in Sheffield pushing the boundaries of 21st century silversmithing. “I like to go for a walk with someone and bring something back with me — bits of tree, seeds, conkers. Then I create work from that experience and the finished pieces end up becoming a memory, as well as a visual representation, of that experience.”
The stunning variety of Berry’s work is underpinned by both its connection to nature and the techniques she experiments with, whether it be raising bowls from flat sheets of silver or casting her finds in silver or bronze and then silver plating them. “I feel like everybody should have art in their life,” says Berry. We couldn’t agree more.
Take the opportunity to view Suzanne’s work as part of our Art in the Home Exhibition from the 1st - 10th November 2019 at Kommune in Sheffield city centre. Art in the Home is a selling exhibition of Mid-Century design classics mixed with the very best of Sheffield’s furniture makers, ceramicists and fine artists.
